The adorable otter you saw in an earlier blog post is a southern/California sea otter that I drew. They are listed as threatened under the
federal ESA and also protected both by the California State law and the US Marine Mammal Protection Act. The sea otter is one of 13 different species of otters and the most well known. There are three sub species of Sea otters, the Southern or California sea otter, Asian or Russian sea otter and Alaskan sea otter.
